The SHSCEvents team understand the impact of their events on the environment and aim to manage their operations in ways that are environmentally sustainable and economically feasible.
SHSCEvents environmental policy involves all staff and service users and seeks to:
- Recognise that the minimum acceptable level of environmental performance is that laid down by legislation
- Promote energy efficiency and responsible energy management
- Promote the responsible use of water and support the conservation of water resource initiatives
- Promote waste minimisation and reduce the environmental impact of waste through beneficial recycling opportunities
- Reduce the pollution of air, land and water where practicable
- Avoid the unnecessary use of hazardous materials and processes and take all reasonable steps to prevent damage to the environment where such materials are essential in use
- Provide environmental training for all staff, promote general awareness of the environmental policy to all staff and service users and encourage individual good practice
- Support, where practicable, the use of products and services of suppliers whose own environmental policies are in accord with SHSCEvents
- Encourage the use of public transport and the provision of facilities for disabled people, pedestrians and cyclists
- Support and encourage biodiversity in our local environment
- Monitor and audit their environmental policy and practice
Recycling & Reducing
At SHSC we recycle the following:
- Plastic bottles
- Paper and cardboard
- Delegate Bags and Badges
- Conference Materials
- Batteries
- Glass
- Plastic cups
- Aluminium cans and soup cans
- Toner Cartridges, keyboards and other office equipment
- Plastic bags
All of our office printers are set up in Eco and Duplex Mode, reducing our toner usage and paper requirements. We also reduce energy waste by switching off all lights, computers, printers and photocopiers before leaving the office or at events.
Community Work
SHSC staff are engaged in the Adopt-a-Beach Project organised by the Marine Conservation Society (MCS). We also support local schools raising funds for computers and other equipment and we work closely with local Universities to provide work placements to students.
Eco-friendly partners
We have engaged with most of our business partners and encouraged them to become environmentally friendly.
Towards a lower Carbon Environment
We encourage delegates and visitors to use public transport where possible by providing them with links and information on our website. We have installed a bike rack outside of our own building in order to encourage more visitors to cycle to our facilities.
Standards
SHSC have obtained the following standards:
